Executive Summary: The Rose 7 Mesh had the shortest stay at number 1 ever ..then the Primeknit came in..but then I played on a dirty floor and the Mesh returned to number 1. Firmer cushioning than the Rose 6, ridiculous traction, supportive and stable while staying flexible, insole swap highly recommended to improve fit and forefoot cushioning especially on the mesh version.
A CLEAR NEW NUMBER ONE IN MY ROTATION.
I’ll admit, I was disappointed that the CLB 16 didn’t work out for me but I wasn’t devastated since I knew the Rose 7 was around the corner.. And I’m glad I waited

Cons: overall Boost is firmer but smoother than last year, forefoot cushioning is underwhelming in mesh version, deadspace in forefoot especially in front of the first eyelet, insole swap recommend to help remedy problems above.

17.5 to 18 ounces?! It doesn’t play heavy at all so I was very surprised. Heaviest Rose to date and heaviest than Lebrons recent shoes.
Traction
Fantastic.
That is all. You can see in the pic below the variable depth of the outsole. Rubber compound and pattern is just perfect.
Hi I’m Schwollo and I’m a traction whore. Traction is my top priority and these are up there in the top tier with the Curry Two, AJ XX8, Kobe IX. These just plain work on anything .
The translucent outsole of the Primeknit cost the Primeknit version the top spot. I played on a semi dusty Pergo floor last night and if you know what Pergo is, it doesn’t absorb anything so dirt just sits on top of the surface. I switched back to the mesh and had no issues the rest of the night.
This translucent outsole compound is similar to the Hyperdunk 16 FK so it picked up everything and needed wiping to stick. When a Primeknit version comes out without this outsole, I’m all in though.

Cushioning
Last year’s Rose 6 set up was great even though it wasn’t full length Boost but making this year’s model full length added more fluidity to the shoe. However, that fluidity comes at the expense of forefoot comfort. The Rose 6 had a nice plush balanced feel from heel to toe while the Rose 7 feels very similar to the Rose 5 with a distinct toe drop and decline in Boost feel from heel to toe despite all the additional Boost. Very similar firmness to the CLB16 overall although the CLB has a meatier and more balanced feel than the Rose 7. Overall it sits lower and feels firmer in the forefoot.
For the life of me I couldn’t figure out why the Boost felt so much firmer in the Rose 7 versus the 6. The forefoot is caged on the lateral side like the Rose 5 so that makes some sense. But there is a lot more Boost in the heel and forefoot and it isn’t a whole lot denser
and then I remembered how the Nike Zoom BB did it and voila, mystery solved
The strobel in the Rose 7 (far left) is hard like a typical board while the Rose 5 (far right)and 6 (middle) use soft cloth. You can even see the texture of the Boost with the Rose 5. The firm strobel is used instead of cloth since there isn’t a Stableframe like the 6 to stabilize the Boost.
So I replaced the ultra thin insole with the good ol Rose 4 PU insole and. I was in cushioning heaven. That feeling of uneven “flat” cushioning went away by just swapping the insole. Adidas really should have put the PU insole into the Rose 7 since they switched the strobel to a firmer board. I know I use the bed analogy a lot but it’s like putting a piece of cardboard on top of a Sealy mattress.
Primeknit Version
After I swapped out the insole of the mesh version, I got my Primeknit version and it looks like somebody at Adidas didn’t get the memo on TPS reports.
Top to bottom: Rose 7 mesh, Rose 7 PK, Rose 4
As you can see the Primeknit version has a thicker insole nearly as thick as the Rose 4 insole. It is the same cheap foam as the mesh version but much thicker so it fills that bit of deadspace. No need to swap anything around with the Primeknit version fit wise although I prefer the PU feel. Why the mesh version doesn’t have this is beyond me.
Well done Adidas but made even better job by me and the Primeknit Rose 7
Fit
The fit of the CLB drove me crazy as I went back and forth for weeks with the sizing. I’m happy to say the Rose 7 fit was simply true to size. Perfect length and width for me and I’m a wide foot. I think narrow footers may want to go down half a size because the lack of half a tongue will make it tough to lace tightly in the forefoot.
However, there is a little deadspace in the toe box again since there isn’t a normal length tongue and there is a synthetic underlay in the toe box
After I swapped the insole, the deadspace was minimized and I had that solid one to one feel in the forefoot. Very similar situation to the Rose 5.
Primeknit
Since this version already has a thicker insole and almost pure Primeknit, the fit improves from the mesh version. There is still a little bubble due to no tongue but it is a lot smaller than the mesh bubble.
Near perfect one to one fit with the Primeknit version with no break in time needed.
The Heel and Midfoot
The heel and midfoot fit is excellent. The lace loops/rope lace combo of the Rose 7 are very tight so they don’t loosen during play but you have to tug pretty hard to tighten correctly. The heel and ankle are drawn back and down perfectly with the synthetic overlays and the feel is very reminiscent of the Rose 5 which I love.
Gone is the ultra puffy padding of the Rose 6 (Man I hated that tongue)
The Rose 7 returns to a slimmer and very contoured collar.
Overall, without the insole swap, the overall fit is very good but with the insole swap, the fit is excellent. No need to change anything on the Primeknit version.

Materials
I thought these were pure mesh with synthetic overlays but there is actually a synthetic underlay ( part of the engineered mesh) in the toe box as well so those of you expecting a Crazylight Boost 2016 feel will be disappointed. That underlay plus lack of a tongue cause that bubble of deadspace in the mesh version. It pops a little in the beginning, especially the medial forefoot, but breaks in nicely.
Primeknit
The thought that went into the design of this upper impresses me. It’s as if they read my article on Why Mesh and Knits don’t work for me.
Primeknit is very comfortable, don’t get me wrong but it needs more strength when it is applied to a basketball shoe. Adidas actually addressed that need by putting nylon (I think) straps underneath all the dark red stripes. This gives the upper strength on lateral moves without giving up flexibility. No break in time needed with the Primeknit version.
The synthetic leather panels aren’t premium feeling but they look nice and do their job so no complaints here.
Great job with the mesh, awesome job with the Primeknit Rose 7.
Support and stability
All DRose shoes have have had a nice balance of protection and mobility and the Rose 7 is no different. Unlike a lot of recent shoes, the Rose 7 ankle collar actually has some strength. No flopping around like a sock. These hug and hold the ankle very similar to the the Rose 5. I actually rolled my bad ankle last night on someone’s foot and kept going . I’m sure my ankle exercises had something to do with it but having the Rose 7 support didn’t hurt.
You have a solid external counter as well as internal to keep the ankle locked in an upright. I’m not sure if that overhang on the heel counter actually cages the Boost at all but the heel is locked in regardless.
Here you can see how the collar heights all compare
Stabilty is excellent with no tippiness in the heel and a very large forefoot outrigger.
Adding to the stability is the torsional X bar we saw in the Rose 5/6 and firm strobel sandwiching the Boost (ala JC3 Vector plates) no tippiness anywhere on the Rose 7.

Containment
Drose and his herky jerky movement require a lot of lateral containment and the Rose line has never failed to deliver. The biggest key to containment is the raised midsole at the forefoot
Add in the synthetic underlay and hidden lace straps and containment is great.
Primeknit
Just as good as the mesh thanks to the nylon strap under the Primeknit
Overall containment isn’t as good as the Rose 5 but still damn good .
Conclusion
I’ve had to modify every Drose from 5 to 7 in some form or another and it isn’t ideal but I’m not going to give up on a shoe if a cheap quick mod does the trick. I highly recommend swapping the insoles to improve the forefoot fit and cushioning. With the Primeknit version, the shoe is near perfect right out of the box. You get better insoles plus a nicer feeling material. All of the shoes in my rotation perform well in every catagory so it’s not surprise the Rose 7 took the top spot from the Curry 2. I love the Curry 2 and it will continue to be used a lot but the Rose 7 does every just as well but with better cushioning. My ideal set up is PK plus Rose 4 PU insole and a solid outsole whenever that comes out but mesh will do just fine until then.
Is the Primeknit version worth the extra $20? Yes. Usually I’d say no, because usually the only major difference is the material but the $20 gets you better feeling materials, fit, cushioning and that extra pair of insoles. I’d wait for the non translucent outsole if you want the best traction performance like I do.
Should you go out and buy the Rose 7 today? Unless you need something today, HELL NO, not when the Rose line prices fall every year by nearly 50%. Drose and Adidas have an unfair and old stigma attached to them which is bad for Adidas but great for smart, patient consumers. The Primeknit version is already coupon eligible on Eastbay after one week making it $128 and I found the black white and all whites for $103 on Amazon
Good luck to the rest of the shoes I review for 2016, it’s going to be hard to beat these out.

i had history 50% achilles rupture on my left leg , i’m pretty sure i suffer it after playing in Kobe V
i’ve no problem with ankles though, cause i always wear my bauerfeind ankle guard when i played.
but lately due to my age and my weight, i expereinces knee pain.
it’s not really painfull yet but it seems that my knees are weaker then it used to be, and after playing it feels a little bit sore.
so i bought 2 bauerfeind knee guard , it does help whehn i played, but when i get home , still some soreness.
i think it’s time for me to get a new shoes, who knows maybe my weight already broke my pair of D rose 6 PK that a bout 1 years old.

For your knee problems try dropping a few pounds. Doing that will do more for your knees that any pair of shoe will do. Also try strengthening your lower body. Body weight squats, lunges are great because you’re strengthening the muscles you use to land without all the impact from actual play. Hope that helps

KD 9 would still be my pick. Drose 7 is my fav but forefoot is thin feeling unless you add an insole. Clb is firm as well but more even feeling. My friend uses the KD 9
Bc of his back (3 herniated discs) . Boost feels good but adidas is inconsistent in its quality control. Diff pairs feel different even among the same shoes.

I was hoping for something that wasn’t white but picked it up myself as it was on sale 30% up here in Canada. Have yet to use it in a game but shot around in it and the traction was insane. I grabbed more normal size and found them a bit too long but hopefully that will help with the toe banging.

Traction is crazy good. I did not pick up a pair as I’m waiting and waiting for more price drops. Try a thicker insole if they run long it might help even with the PK thicker than mesh Insole.

Hey Scwollo thank you for the review. I am looking to buy a new pair of shoes to ball in next year. I play PG and I’m really considering buying these. I am a bit worried that these shoes will be too heavy and bulky. The court I play on is extremely dusty and the traction would be great. Its just the bulkiness I am worried about. How does it feel when you play in it, would the bulky feeling be a deal breaker for a pg?

Thanks for the response Schwollo! I own 2 shoes, the soldier 8 and the soldier 9. I stopped playing in the soldier 9s because the traction performed very poorly because of how dusty the court is. So as of now I hoop in the soldier 8’s. Ive enjoyed playing in them but I feel like It’s time for an upgrade
As I said before the court I play on is super dusty so traction is my top priority. I’m looking for a responsive cushion but I would like some impact protection.
So I have narrowed down my choices to the D Rose 7s and Kyrie 3’s. The only thing that worries me about the Rose 7s is the bulkiness because of all the support. The Kyrie 3s seem very solid but I don’t know about the cushion. Sure it’s super responsive but I don’t know if it’s gonna be comfortable to play in. The CLB is an option like you said, but they don’t sell them at any malls around where I live so I can’t try them on to tesr for heel slippage. So basically it’s just down to Rose 7s or Kyrie 3s.
Sorry if I’m sounding so picky I just want to buy a shoe that I’ll enjoy playing in for many years to come 🙂

Haha picky is the name of the game with shoes. If you were in the Soldier 8/9 you won’t notice much of a change with the Rose. It’s flexible where it’s supposed to be. Only other shoe I could think of that might fit the bill is the Curry 2 or 2.5. Firmer cushioning but still good great traction (more impact protection than kyries imo). Don’t fiddle with the CLB if you can’t try on or don’t want to poke holes in it. Hope that helps !

I considered the Crazy Explosive but since cushion and support are two of my top three I am now torn between the Rose 6 and Rose 7. I have owned the Rose 4, 4.5 and 5. I took some time off and am only now getting back into basketball, hence the gap from the Rose 5. Since I’m in my 40’s now cushion has become more important to me. The Rose 6 can be had for about $100 while the Rose 7 Primeknit verision is still at $160. In terms of cushion does the Rose 6 beat the Rose 7 with and without your insole swap? My Rose 4 insoles look a bit more compressed than yours and I didn’t really like the forefront firmness of the Rose 5. I like the new materials and traction on the 7 but the cushion and lower price has got me thinking of the Rose 6.

The forefoot of the Rose 7 feels a lot like the Rose 5. If cushioning is what your want go with the 6. It isn’t full length but it is just a lot more plush and thicker in the heel and toe than that Rose 7, CE, CLB. CE is soft in the heel and midfoot but forefoot is thin. Rose 6 traction is still good just not Rose 7 level. Hope that helps !

I went true to size but I went true to size with the 4,5,6 as well due to wide feet. Never bought the Pk version. Half size down is the safest bet though

Just wanted to thank you for the recommendation. I got the Rose 6 in the PK version and it feels great! Adidas made some upgrades in the PK version, less bulkier tongue and different lacing, that made the fit better than the non-PK version. Now I have to go to shoe for ankle support (Rose 5) and cushion (Rose 6). Now I need one for traction. I play at a community center which also has gymnastics and the floor is really dusty and slippery. I picked up a ClutchFit Drive 2 on discount hoping to try out UA’s herringbone traction but it grips a lot less than my Rose 6. The only guys I see not slipping is a black Adidas and a Kobe IX. Any suggestions on traction for dusty courts? Seems that you like the Rose 7, AJ XX8, Curry 2 and Kobe IX. I have a XX8 NIB but haven’t worn them yet since I need more ankle support. They say the Rose 7 wears out pretty fast and that the stickiness of the Curry 2 doesn’t last that long. Is the Curry 2 a big step up from the ClutchFit Drive 2? If not, I might be leaning towards the Rose 7 unless you say otherwise. Thanks!

Games with CFD and curry 2 and it was night and day on a dusty floor. Rose 7 durability I can’t comment on bc I rotate so often but it’s awesome in terms of performance which I love of course . Rose 6 is pretty good as well so you’re not missing out on too much

Altho im a forward i still change direction alot, need a shoe with great traction and support above everything else, but I also need some cushion because I jump and come down hard alot (rebounds, layups, blocks).
D rose 7 sounds almost perfect for me but im worried it will be too bulky and slow me down.
I have a pair of curry 3’s, love the traction and materials, but need something with a little more cushion and support/containment.

Are the curry 3 too bulky feeling to you ? What other shoes did you like or dislike in the past. Almost any shoe with excellent traction will be pretty poor in terms of durability outdoors due to soft rubber so you kind of have to choose between what you want more..

Thx for responding, no the curry 3 is not too bulky, in the past I have liked more minimal shoes like the jordan chris paul line and kobe’s. Id rather have great traction with softer rubber then worse traction with hard rubber. The curry 3 had a nice balance of the 2 tho.

I’d say curry 2 or 2.5 but probably not enough cushion. Crazylight Boost 2016 might fit the bill if you want more ankle freedom and add an extra eyelet if you’re not locked in the heel. Crazy explosive isn’t bad although traction isn’t as good as the curry2-3. If you can try the Rose 7 on that’s ideal . Hyperdunk is also something else you can look at

Great in depth review! I want to get these as my next go to bball sneakers (i’m actually trying to decide between the rose 7 and curry 2.5). However, I’ve seen other reviews where people have complained about a containment/lockdown issue where their foot would slide into the front of the shoe banging up their toes. Did you experience this at all? Containment and lockdown are both very important to me after traction.

I did not have that issue but I have wide feet so that probably helps with any sliding forward. No issues with lateral containment on hard cuts in either shoe as well. It really comes down to cushioning and fit you’re trying to decide between those two. Firmer set up or a better one to one fit go with curry 2.5. If you like Boost go with Rose 7 (fit is still excellent for me).

I was in same boat trying to decide between rose 7 and Curry 2.5. I have the rose 6 already. Traction was important because the court I play on is so dusty. Got the 2.5 last week at the outlet for about half the price of the 7. Fit is really nice and snug and the cushion isn’t that bad. Better than what I was expecting.

Cushioning isn’t bad at all just firmer than other shoes. Lots of ppl are sleeping on the 2.5 and it’s reflecting in the prices which is good for us 🙂

Little late in the comments..I finally wore my ROSE 7 PK’s to play last night. Great, amazing traction. I felt they were way heavier than the the Rose 6 PK. Also, I had a hard time getting the laces tight. What did you think about the lacing? I might be wrong.Thanks for all the great articles!

I played in the ROSE PK 7’s for the second time last night and I wanted to say that I pulled those laces tighter and wore thicker socks. I like how they played much better the second time around. They’re growing on me. Traction is incredible. I don’t think I wiped them much at all.

To you and dale (?) and make sure to pull the last few laces tighter bc your foot shouldn’t slide forward due to those laces. If you don’t tighten them enough then yes you can get that foot sliding forward. Guess you figured it out lol .

I felt pretty much exactly the same – overall I liked the 6 PK better cause the 7 is just too bulky and I can’t lock my foot in enough to avoid it from sliding forward

I finally got my hands on a pair of the black/blue PKs after having the black mesh pair, so I can do a decent assessment of both. No difference in the traction. The fit on the PK is much better with a lot less dead space in the forefoot. It’s more of a one-to-one fit. The laces are thinner and stay put. I (and other reviews that I read) had an issue with the mesh’s laces. They never stayed tied. I’m not sure if it was because they were thicker, but I had to double knot them. There’s no break-in period for the PK, and I didn’t have to deal with the dreaded toe-bumping that I did with the mesh. The PK is also much more breathable than the mesh. You’d think it would be the opposite, but the mesh gets hot like an oven, and then retains the sweat inside. I don’t have that issue with the PK. The PK also plays lighter than the mesh. With all these pluses, I will say that the forefoot cushion in the mesh was much better. I don’t know why the cushion is inconsistent. I use aftermarket insoles, and the cushion felt better in the mesh. I get better court feel with the PK, but maybe it’s TOO much court feel.

I’ve found Boost to be inconsistent but still good overall. I tried on four or five different pairs of Crazy Explosives and they all felt different. Same with the CLB . So you’re not alone

That’s what worries me. At least with Zoom, I know if it’s gonna be good or crappy depending on the model. It’s not gonna vary within the same model. I might try to add a forefoot gel pad to put under my insoles to see if that works. These are the best fitting basketball kicks I’ve had since the Soldier 8, and I don’t want to give up on them just yet.

Great advice on replacing that insole. It helps alot. I was wondering why the shoe felt so flat. I´m the type of a heavy guy and I even ran into footpad pains until I put in my old D Rose 773 II insoles. Thanks and keep it up.

I’m not a good person to ask about outsole durability because I rotate so frequently. The Curry 2/2.5 should last longer since it is thicker and deeper than the Rose 7 though. If you want more softer cushioning go with Rose 7 if you want firmer cushioning and a slightly better fit go with curry 2.5. Hope the helps !

Found a blue pair on amazon that seems to have a softer kind of mesh (based on looks), since it was basically the same price as the 5s and the 8s play so similar, I decided to go for it

Just got them, changed the insoles with a pair from a curry 2.5 and got cero dead space, they feel heavier in hand that my 5s but lighter on feet

Hi Schwollo, I went 10.5 (my true to size) with the Lillard 2, and I’m perfecty fine, a bit room but no issues, so which size should I get for these. I can’t try them on at store so I have to order these. Thanks

If you’re getting the Primeknit version I would go half a size down. I take a 9.5 in all my hoop shoes but 9.5 in Primeknit fits too loosely. I rarely use them despite liking everything else.

Yea. Def belongs there at the top. Am thinking now of getting the D rose 7 low, but all I see are translucent outsoles on ebay. I’m going down half a size again, but am wondering how the fit will be, and may be worried about potential heel slippage. Definitely worth taking the gamble though.

My rotation now btw: D rose 7 PK, curry 2.5, kobe 9 em, elite low, and elite high. Definitely as much of a traction whore as you lol.

I feel like I could go down half a size on these btw. Any advice? I have a 10 in the curry 2.5’s, and the size 10 is just spot on with that. Also have the crazylight boost 2016 primeknit in 9.5, and it was narrow at first and pinched my pinkie toes, but then it broke in and was fine. These, I have the primeknit version in size 9.5 and feel like it’s a bit big. If I did size down though, that’d put me at size 9, which is like a whole size smaller than the curry 2.5’s lol.

Did you add an insole in your Rose 7? Curry 2.5 run short and small. I’m assuming true to size is 9.5 for you? Or is it 10?

Nope, no insole. I just have the primeknit version. Yea, my true to size is 9.5 which I only found out today after measuring lol. Width is probably normal.

I’m gonna get another pair now in size 9 then. Will report back when I get them. Then after I’m gonna get the mesh, and then the low(if i ever see a solid outsole lol)

Okay, so the size 9’s came in, and i think they’re the right fit. just a thumb’s width of space in the forefoot area, but width wise they’re quite snug. probably couldn’t go down another half size without getting pinching. The UK Size for this is 8.5, which I wonder has anything to do with this being a big size 9. Usually the UK size will be a full size down from the US.
But yea, I think my TTS now is definitely 9.5 US. Now I’m also wanting to try my TTS in the curry 2.5 lol.

Yea adidas UK to us sizing is weird. Curry 2.5 runs really tight I’m not sure if you’d like that one lol

I’m looking good traction, strong cushion and Impact protection and good support.
For traction my référence IS kyrie 1
For cushion hyper rev 2014 and 2016
For support LeBron soldier 9.
So would you recommend adidas 6 or 7 ?
I mainly play outdoor with some little knees issues due to 37yo

Rose 7. Traction one of the best ever. Cushioning is very good although a little thin in the forefoot. Support is just enough. The Rose 6 is great also but it’s got too much padding around the tongue (cushioning is more plush too. Hope that helps
