Is this how I feel about the V4? Read on..or just scroll to the bottom you bum.
Pros: traction when clean, cushioning fit stability containment
Cons: outsole rubber is very sticky picks up dust and needs to be wiped to stay tacky, some initial pain from strap they goes away. Can easily over tighten laces due to lots padding
Best for : any position
Sizing advice: these look huge on foot but lots of interior padding so go true to size or half size up.
Buying Advice: wait as always especially with uber discount combo of Harden and Adidas. Adidas has a 20%-30% off sale almost every month and get ready for a bunch of Adidas shoes from 🇨🇳 at the outlets. Fair is $100, bottom around $50.
Weight
Adidas touts these as the lightest Harden ever and they are …but then again every Harden have been over 16 ounces. The V4 is slightly lighter than past Hardens At 15.5 ounces which is on heavier side for a low but at least a marketing claim is the the truth for once.
Traction
Fibonacci where art thou? Oh the silly marketing stories people make up and believe and push. So much for tracking the Beard’s movements to “optimize” performance.
I found the traction on these excellent when clean or freshly wiped although there are some slick spots around the medial edges thanks to zero texture as seen above. On dusty floors I didn’t have any major issues although it would pick up dust but I wasn’t on skates and a wipe would get it back on track. There is definitely more flexibility with the grooves on this pattern than what we saw on the V1/2 and the rubber is tacky so that all contributes to how well it worked for me.
Overall these are great on clean NBA floors and good enough on dusty floors so that’s good enough for me. I’d rank these #2 behind the V3 overall followed by the V2 and V1.
Cushioning
Lightstrike strikes again and will probably keep striking from here on out.
Adidas and Harden decided to take a step back or side step (pun intended) by moving away from Boost and using Lightstrike instead. Supposedly Lightstrike is used in place of Boost to save weight and while the shoe is lighter we can’t tell if it’s due to less actual foam or the the actual weight of the foam (I’m guessing the latter).
Normal foam strobel board and plenty of padding around the ankle
Lightstrike is verycomfortable and I didn’t miss Boost at all during play but it’s just another foam. Wasn’t one of the benefits of eTPU (Boost) durability and extended life since it didn’t flatten out ? I do not expect Lightstrike to keep that fresh feel for long but then again I rotate my shoes a lot. Overall Lightstrike reminds me of fresh Lunarlon with a little Micro G in it. It’s a great feeling foam that plays low to the ground. I guess it’s worth the $10 price cut ? If you love Boost I suggest stocking up on Vol 3 bc I have a feeling Adidas hoops is moving away from Boost just like they have moved away from premium materials. Adidas’s sales numbers rose mostly due to running and apparel not b-ball shoe sales.
Fit
Portrait mode on iPhone 11.. 😂
I suggest true to size or half a size up.
These look huge on foot but that’s due to a lot of materials and padding. They run slightly long (not crazylight or marquee boost long) but just a tad. The shoe fits very snugly and due to all the padding you can easily over tighten the laces like I did the first time out.
You can see that the V4 last eyelets are placed further back and lower than the V3 to really pull the ankle back and down. They also added more eyelets. I guess Adidas designers are reading my reviews because I suggested that back with the CLB16
There is zero heel slip almost right out of the box thanks to properly placed top eyelets, a slightly higher overall cut and plenty of internal padding.
There is zero movement inside the shoe also thanks to plenty of padding so you are locked in in every direction. It’s almost uncomfortable at first because shoes have gotten away from padding and I over tightened the laces the first time I played in these. There is a strap that digs slightly but into the bottom of the ankle but they goes away fairly quickly. It does make the midfoot fit a little tighter than the rest but overtime that strap will loosen up for any foot shape.
Well done Adidas, I’ll take my cut for the design in the form of a retweet ..oh wait I need Twitter.
Materials
Mesh and suede panels. Sure ?
Nothing offensive or outstanding about the materials, pretty much par for the price. I think a lot of people loved the perceived value of the Harden V1 but as usual as the Harden line has gone from new to oldish in three years, materials have gotten cheaper feeling. Still no issues with materials. No pinching or weird flexing so 👍.
Support and Stability
Support is actually kind of there due tor he higher cut and firm heel counter
I think stability is where the V4 really shines. Just wide everywhere without feeling unnatural.
It does take a wear or two to get used to the width but geez it’s worth the safety. It’s somewhat set up like the old Feet You Wear (or BYW) which some may like but it’s not overly flexible especially midfoot and back for midfoot support and it allows a nice balance between stability and flexibility.
Well done Adidas!
Containment
No issues here
Conclusion
Other than some small slick spots with the traction, I really have nothing bad to say about the Harden V4. Outstanding traction when clean, great fit out of the box, very stable and safe feeling plus it’s $10 less than last years? Geez Adidas, if only retail was the bottom of the V4 pricing…
Although Boost is gone on the V4, I really didn’t miss it and Lightstrike provides plenty of feedback and bounce to make running up and down the court fun. I really don’t like the styling of the V4 but maybe that’s the old curmudgeon in me who likes simpler styling. I think Adidas finally got it right with the V4 in every aspect especially stability. All in all, I think this is the best Harden Adidas has made..you known, all four of them.
Thanks for another great review Schwollo. I concur with most of your points. Here are my thoughts:
– My pair fit a little long, but narrow in the midfoot. I mean boa constrictor suffocating narrow. I played in my pair for 10 days and wore them around the house to get them to stretch out, but I just kept getting pain from the midfoot strap pulling the midfoot lightstrike “pod” into my foot. OUCH. Like, MF’er ouch. My foot is normal width and I keep hearing this goes away for most. I sent my pair back to ADC for this problem. Maybe I just need to try another pair and maybe cut the midfoot strap because I don’t think it really does anything but cause me pain.
– Cushioning felt good – like a middle ground between bounce and boost. I do wonder about longevity. The strobel felt like a fabric cloth over a plastic modulator plate. Maybe that’s the infinity on top of the cushioning this time instead of below it. I’m looking forward to a fastpass dissection to see what’s going on.
– Heel to toe transition and court feel were very good.
– Traction is very sticky and picks up everything on the court like a swifter. When the sole is clean the traction is great. Luckily wiping was quick and easy for me.
– Shoes look gigantic on feet and in hand. Was amazed how much longer and wider they were than other shoes I have in the same size (e.g. CE16s, Vol 1-3s, 34s, Kobe 10s, etc.). I didn’t feel myself trip over them like clown shoes, but it did take a little getting used to.
– Materials were fine on the barbershop colorway. Nothing exciting overall, but the suede felt soft and is a nice change of pace from the synthetic materials on most other recent shoes.
– Lockdown and containment were great for me. No slipping around in the shoe.
Besides the midfoot pain, I thought the shoe was very good. I will grab another pair in the coming months when they go on steep discount (well, because we know they will). Until then I’m happy to play in Vol 3s if I want to play in some Hardens. I’m actually pretty happy with my 34s and KD12s in general, so I’m in no rush to go grab another shoe at full price unless the reviews say they are amazing.
I suspect the move to light strike recently is due to adidas’ exclusive rights to etpu running out, so adidas need to quickly differentiate themselves incase everyone else decides to hop on the etpu train.
good morning sir,
I am looking to buy a pair of these to play ball in, however, i play mainly outdoors, will the traction and cushioning be good for those conditions. I previously ha vol 2 and 3. Also is the overall feel and fit comparable to dame 5? Thanks.
Traction will work well outdoors but the rubber is soft so it may not last long . No it doesn’t fit it feel anything like the dame 5. Livelier cushioning more padding more stable
Got my pair in the other day. I got the green glow cw with my birthday discount code. Still have yet to play in them cause my rec league season finished last week so I’ve just been playing outdoors this week and don’t wanna take these outdoors yet. Maybe later on in the shoe’s lifespan I can take it there.
Initial try on felt really nice. I didn’t know what to expect of the change in foam but I don’t really wanna judge cushion based on step-in comfort. I feel like they get the fit and containment better with each iteration of the Harden and as long as the traction doesn’t end up like day 1 of playing in the v1s then I might be grabbing this pair pretty often to play in for regulated games just becauase I like the nice and secure fit.
Well, now my interest is piqued! Thanks for this review. Having realized I prefer foam cushioning, I’ve still been hooping strictly in HD17 lows and V2s (which I still love—just recently copped third and fourth pairs lightly used on eBay for like $120 total 😬… second pair still going strong but want to dedicate that to occasional outdoor action). Although some of your reviews of Zoom-based shoes sounded really good, I’ve held out as I’ve been quite content with the aforementioned models and pretty firm in my conviction that I prefer foam. But so this is the first shoe to come along since the V2 that I’m actually considering hooping in!
One aspect that gave me slight pause was your saying they look huge on foot and how much wider the forefoot looks in the pic next to the V3. Since I don’t have the V3, I checked your V3 review for the same comparison shot with the V2s in hopes that the 3 would be slimmer than the 2, which resembles Strength Shoes when I look down at my feet—haha! NOPE! The 3s look just as wide as the 2s, which makes me think the 4s are unbelievably wide. It’s reassuring at least that you write that they don’t feel unnatural after a wear or two.
Guess another potential cause for concern could be longevity of Lightstrike. Good reason to follow your advice and await discounts, so it isn’t as disappointing if the shit breaks down real fast, haha! Fairly easy to do since I’m content with current rotation… although I must admit I’m a little thirsty for a new hoops model after playing in the same two models for two years 😆😆
Sorry for the late reply my man..yes the 4 is def much wider than the 3 and slightly wider than the 2. These might be the “best of 4 “ hardens but all have had issues of some sort so take it with a grain of salt lol. These check all the boxes though so can’t complain at all.
Sorry for the slow response here too. Word on the widths. I mean, the upsides on the V2s (cushioning, great fit, stability, reliable traction, etc.) outweigh the downsides (heavy, not the most fluid/minimal feel), so I’m confident I could tolerate the V4s’ minor imperfections and still really enjoy the shoe. Also just saw a picture last night of a colorway I like—white and light gray upper with blue midsole (dude in astronaut costume wore them to watch a ballgame for a adidas marketing stunt?). Gonna bidé my time and see if I can’t get a sweet deal…
I still like the v2 as well. I bought a few V3 on discount but still prefer the v2. I’ll wait until end of season to get any v4’s thst I really like to look at. Sneaker marketing is insane nowadays lol
I picked up a pair of Dame 5s and I’m sliding all over the admittedly dusty court I play on – much worse than I was in my previous Kyrie 4s. Any shoes you’d recommend for bad conditions? From your reviews it looked like maybe the PG3, UA Spawn and Kyrie Lows could be decent choices?
Thanks – I’m trying the Spawn ($60 on UA.com), and will continue to work to break in the Dames. It’s been about a month now – maybe 10 runs – how long do your break-in periods usually last?
Should I grab these bad boys or dame 5? Adidas got huge discounts on dame 5 and now in a dilemma whether I should buy these or dame 5. Hopefully, you can help me out~
Why not Just get the dame now and the Harden later when they go on discount. Harden Lightstrike feels better than the dame 5 and traction is a little better overall though
So Nightwing and others have said that the forefoot impact protection is lacking. You say that there is a good amount of bounce and impact in these, and that’s including the forefoot for you? I trust your reviews as much as anyone else’s, but having multiple Vol 2 pairs has made me hold off from these. On the other hand, ADC has had tempting offers ($70 right now with code) and Harden has been balling out of his mind so I’m torn at the moment….
I think it’s $90 with code bc it’s 30% off? Anyways no issues with impact protection it is similar to the vol 3 forefoot thickness. Plenty of spring in the heel and so so bounce in the forefoot (foams just need more volume than Zoom) Don’t worry hardens aren’t going anywhere but 90 bucks or less is more than fair
Having multiple pairs of the Vol 2 and hearing the Lightstrike in the forefoot is lacking has caused me to hold off. On the other hand, Harden has been balling out of his mind and adidas and Dick’s has been offering these for discounts ($70 today with code HARDEN60 on ADC) so I’m torn.
I’ve also seen you say that you prefer the Vol 2 vs the 3, so I would imagine the Vol 2 would be better in these in impact protection (while weight and traction go to the Vol 4)?
Sorry the post happened twice because it didn’t show up when I first posted and I guess the server had to take some time before it showed up, thanks for the answer and sorry for the multiple posts.
I live overseas and just got referred to your site – absolutely love it. My current rotation includes HD X, PG3, Harden 4 and Dame 4, and all of those got first team here so I feel kind of validated haha.
I have two questions: 1) The Lightstrike on Harden 4 feels exactly the same as the Freshfoam on my New Balance Zante running shoes. Do you agree? If yes, should NB replace Fuelcell with Freshform on the next OMN1s or I guess OMN2s? Those look great but cushioning could be better. 2) What do you like best out of HD X, PG3, Harden 4, and maybe Promodel 2G? I’m thinking about stocking up to back up my rotation. Thanks!
Appreciate the love ! I haven’t tried the fresh foam in the Zante so I can’t say how they compare. I’ve only tried fresh foam In the Cruz and it felt good but more dense than Lightstrike (less bounce) . I think the Omn1 was just a hyped up shoe not really very good overall for $140 so I’d say pass and wait. My favorite out of those 4 is the Harden v4 bc it does everything well and is super stable. But like all adidas they aren’t selling not sure how it is overseas. Pg3 would be second fav fyi. Promodel just gets too hot but it’s sexy and the HD x is awesome but wish traction were better, cheers!
Thanks for the comparison! I’ll play both the PG3 and Hardens longer and see which I like more. Hardens are kind of a new rig that I’m getting used to whereas PG3 is more familiar, though if my teammate (who got duped by NB and got two pairs of OMN1s) gets PG3 I might follow suit – btw he said shoes for sale in Asia are wider than those in the US for the same model. The pair I got from US is a big long and narrow. In any case, I may still end up getting Pro Models just for old times sake…thanks again!
Just tried that at outlet days ago and found true to size is too narrow for me at the kid foot. Here in Hong Kong adidas is doing Valentines sale and can get two pairs of harden 4 at USD 115. Hesitating….
Well looks like I have a Barbershop pair on the way. At $66 on ADC with the ADIEXTRA code I couldn’t say no (plus I’ll just send them back before the 30 days if I don’t like them). I tried these on and I really like the fit better than the Vol 3. I am fine with the impact protection of the 3s and the their traction is insane, but the heel fit and just not feeling secure always keeps me back from going full speed. It sounds like these correct that. As long as the impact projection is good and has some bounce then I’ll be fine trying these. Once the Lightstrike is done I’ll go back to my Vol 2. It’s so hard to go back to those after having the Vol 3 being lightweight and having way better traction.
It’s like you said, they all have their flaws and you lose in some area. If the 2s had even slightly the traction the 3s had I would get over the weight because the cushioning is perfect.
Yep the 3 fit is it’s main flaw which is a shame. Might poke some holes in mine to try to get them to fit better. I got another pair of 4 bc at 66 bucks shipped you can’t go wrong. Adidas prices fall like rocks which is great for us consumers. I think you’ll enjoy them let me know!
Let me know how that project goes because I considered the same after your CrazyLight Boost 2016 experiment. I am able to get mostly decent lockdown, but I have to tie the shoes so tight that my toes go numb the first game I play (until I stretch the upper and laces through one game of play). That gets so annoying.
So first time playing in the Vol 4 last night for 2 hours….
I freaking love these, like a lot. I feel so much more secure than the Vol 3 mainly due to the heel lockdown (could’ve been the materials on my Vol 3 pair because they use the soft primeknit upper). The Lightstrike feels interesting, I’m not sure how to describe it. I won’t say it’s necessarily bouncy, although it does feel thicker in the forefoot than them Vol 3 Boost. I also feel less sore than my Vol 3. They feel low to the ground while also offering good impact protection and soft cushioning feel in the forefoot.
Traction wasn’t as good as the Vol 3 but better than the Vol 2; still good enough for me to feel confident doing my moves. These felt as light as the Vol 3 but more secure so I felt like how I use to feel in Kobe 8/9s but with more cushioning and support.
I was also lucky enough to get the last pair of Cosmos Vol 3 in a 9.5 (the black/white colorway). I think I am going to send them back because the 4s feel so much more secure, even with low cut socks. The Boost is nice but Lightstrike works fine for me and I can still feel that heel not being secure like I like (even thought they do feel tighter, I figure that’s just pre break-in). I kind of want to break them in because they were cheap and was wondering if the materials might not stretch like my Sees The Game black/blue colorway.
Just curious, how did the Lightstrike feel for your over time? You said it got worse or diminished? I haven’t played in them since the other night but have been wearing them casually and the workout gym and I just love Lightstrike.
Yea it starts compressing a lot faster than boost or Zoom. Still good but lost that fresh out of the box feel fairly fast. Or it’s just quality control dunno
🤷🏻♂️
I’ll be playing in them again tonight. So far I have logged probably a good 4 hours with them (including gym workouts). It seems like it has actually gotten softer to me but still offering thick impact protection.
I’m still holding out on whether I should return the 3 or not. I wonder if I play in them for 2 weeks if adidas would accept them?
So Weartesters posted a review about the SL20 runner that uses all Lightstrike. Both reviews have it high ratings in terms of comfort, impact protection, and durability. Would that give you anymore hope regarding the Lightstrike in the Vol 4 durability? Mine have still felt fine after around 4 weeks.
If you like them it doesn’t matter what I say. Be confident in what you like. On top of that hardens will be on sale again soon so stock up if you like them. I picked up two pair when they were 62 bucks a few weeks ago. Compared to my original pair I can tell a difference but it isn’t a huge difference just feels a less springy.
Hi there! New fan of your reviews thank you for doing them! Between the Harden v4 and v3, if you had to pick 1 to wear, which would it be and why? Currently im stuck between these two and only have the budget to get one
Would you say this shoe is ok for someone with plantar fasciitis? (and also my left achilles has been sore a while now..). Adidas is having some big sales for the harden vol 4 and was wondering this shoe would work for me.
How long would the lightstrike last as compared to zoom or boost? Saw a pair in my size for 64 but wanted to see if I should just keep the kd 12 or invest in these
For 64 bucks yea for sure. One of the best of 2019. If it doesn’t last long it’s 64 bucks. Kd12 Zoom will last much longer in terms of zoom feel though bc it’s encapsulated air whereas a foam just feels springy until all the air holes are compressed
Just picked up Harden Vol 4 and Marquee Boost Low’s. I’ll probably wear one of each on each foot next chance I get to play, but wanted to see your opinion. My go-to’s right now is Crazy Explosive 2017, so I know boost is life but always curious on new tech. Also think Adidas missed the opportunity to use some good Bounce that they use in their running shoes to make quality bball shoe that would kill instead of using them exclusively on lower end models. Yes I know Dame’s and DON’s use Bounce but implementation isn’t the same as the Alphabounce runners which are super bouncy event after more than a year of daily wearing.
I think they didn’t want to sacrifice stability for a softer Bounce in a hoops shoe. I think Lightstrike is pretty nice but it isn’t Boost and it definitely does not last as long. I wouldn’t be surprised if your 2017 CE feel better after using the V4 for a few months. eTPU lasts a ton longer but it is more expensive (I guess) and most ppl don’t want to pay for it which is probably why we are seeing fewer and fewer boost hoops models.
do these feel the same or better than the nxt lvls? Thanks

Lots of factors but I’m guessing 6 months at that rate. I suggest rotating daily to allow the foam to rest a little

Both great you’ll be fine either way. Weird about the width but makes sense

I had a typo. I meant “a bit long and narrow” – didn’t mean to write anything, um, weird. Sorry.

Yep the fit is really good vs the vol3. Just nice and secure all around. Love the big 40% off sales at adidas 🙂

Yes adidas.com will accept used stuff back within 30 days. The 3 fit will feel pretty sloppy after wearing the 4.

I like the IV better. Much Better fit almost as good traction as the 3 and very wide stable base.

Thanks for the quick reply fam! What about the cushioning? Boost v Lighstrike. Which had better comfort, longevity etc? Thank you!

It’s just a different feel no issues with either both are very comfortable. Lightstrike dies more quickly imo but still playable.

Would you say this shoe is ok for someone with plantar fasciitis? (and also my left achilles has been sore a while now..). Adidas is having some big sales for the harden vol 4 and was wondering this shoe would work for me.

Yea I’m a former pf sufferer and these are good to go. Not uber stiff but not super flexible like a few shoes I’ve tested

Keep up the great work!
