Easymoneysniper meet Easymoneyreview.
“Innovation” is what every sneaker head wants these days. Despite all that I write about newer rarely means better, new tech speak gets everyone’s attention. Thankfully, Nike went with the ol’ tried and true with a sprinkle of innovation to give us one of the most well rounded KDs to date.
Pros: traction, low to the ground yet bouncy cushioning, fit, stability, containment
Con: runs narrow
Sizing Advice: true to size length wise but runs narrow. True to size for regular and narrow footers, wide footers will probably want to go up half a size.
Best for: any position
Buying Advice: KD is not MJ, Steph, or Lebron so just wait a few weeks or months and you’ll see more and more discounts as always. I got these at Dick’s for $120 on release day which is fair. More fair is $100, bottom around $60-75.
Weight
15.5 ounces which is average for a mid
Traction
Pretty much the same set up as the XI but with more segmentation within each semi circle which helps the sole brush dirt away. This translucent outsole isn’t as sticky as what we’re used to seeing and it still picks up some dust but the segmentation allows it to brush most of the dust away. My first few hours days on dusty floor weren’t great but I suspect it just needed a very light break in.
Nike has done a nice job with its subtle yet effective micro grooves in my opinion. From the Kobe AD to the KD12, I have been happy overall, albeit at different degrees of success. These are not the absolute best traction ever but it is far better than average and will keep the majority of hoopers including my picky ass self happy.
Nice job Nike!
Cushioning
Let’s face it, cushioning marketing is every sneaker companies sweet spot. 99.9% of the world could care less about different lace set ups, new ways to improve ankle mobility or what street superstar ABC’s great, great second uncle lived on; people want good looks and a good feeling cushioning set up.
Yippee!
There is a lot of tech marketing surrounding the KD12 with the articulated zoom seemed in directly to the strobel plus an extra hex zoom in the heel. Cool, sounds awesome right ? It feels like full length Zoom should, you know like the Zoom BB with an extra Zoom unit in the heel to give it just a little extra sexy sauce.
With all that cool new tech speak, I don’t think attaching the Zoom directly to the shoe feels any different than using a cloth strobel like the Zoom BB. It’s like sleeping with sheets on your bed vs no sheets at all. Same diff, both feel great is the bottom line (yep that bed reference goes back a few years and stand true still).
I really like how they shaped the insole to match the gaps in the Zoom so there isn’t any wobble from the outer rim space . Stupid simple details like that are important.
I personally can’t tell the difference between articulated versus regular full length Zoom but even so if you didn’t tell me the tech specs of the Zoom set up, I still would have been happy. Did I mention the cushioning gets even better with break in as the foam breaks in?
Well well well well done Nike! Did I say well done? Well done, how I do not like my steak but how I like my Zoom.
Fit
Wide footers will want to go up half a size, regular and narrow footers can go true to size. Length is true to size while width is narrower than normal. I tried both true to size and half size up and while there was a little more space at the toe, the width just felt better for me from a comfort perspective without any excess shifting or movement inside.
If you can’t figure out how to get your foot into the KD12, maybe you should pick up a different sport. Half tongue construction gives you plenty of space to get your foot in
Ankle collar construction holds the ankle and heel down with some contouring. The collar portion above the contours does not conform around your ankle like a Hyperdunk does so you will see and feel some space around the upper part of your ankle.
Overall it’s just a simple semi traditional set up, no heel slip, no side to side movement. Both lateral and medial sides are raised to keep your foot in place (see support).
Nothing much to say here, it just works.
Nice job Nike!
Materials
Oh wheww, if it’s labeled it must be legit. No editing allowed Nike (see Protrogate)
Quad axial flywire.
What’s that mean? It means the flywire is going up and down and left to right. Using the word quad and axial makes it sound way more impressive but it’s really just a mesh with some flywire haphazardly mixed in for strength and texture. It pops a little but to start but not much and it’s a nice blend of strength and flexibility. People that want a material to looks or feels expensive will not think much of this upper What happened to the flyknit movement ? These could have been made out of regular mesh but what fun is that in a sig shoe?
Did you know KD loves baking? Why else would Nike put parchment paper on his shoe? This little tag is annoyingly cheap looking and feeling but it saves Nike 2 cents per shoe thanks to Ted from accounting
Overall materials are fine, nothing ultra luxurious and it works fine with a splash of color and texture with the QuadAxial Flywire.
Support and stabilityPer usually, support comes from the fit and normal flexibility heel counter. In addition the raised Phylon on both sides of the shoe keep your foot upright and on the footbed.
Midfoot support is good, not overly flimsy but not board like either.
Stability is good nothing outstanding. I would like a little more width like the PG3 and WNZ2 but it works fine.
No issues at all with support and stability.
Containment
After taking a break for the past three years, containment is back!No issues here.. it’s like 2015 y’all!
Raised midsole heel to toe keep your foot in on hard cuts. Who would have thunk it?
Conclusion
The Durant line really did a 180 from the KD XI which in my opinion is a good thing. Although the XI was ultra comfortable and free flowing it didn’t have the level of support I’m really used to. Obviously, Kd has no issues in them so why should a recreational baller have any? #itainttheshoes
As many of you know the Zoom BB1 is one of my favorite shoes of all time due it’s all around performance but it’s cloth strobel full length Zoom really made the Zoom stand out; putting on the KD12 gave me flashbacks to the Zoom BB thanks to the cushioning set up because it feels just that good. By switching back to a directly underfoot Zoom set up, the shoe just feels fun and exciting with even more Zoom in the heel. Of course, cushioning isn’t the end all for me and thankfully, the KD 12 does everything well from A-Z. It is a bit understated looks wise and draws some serious inspiration from the Hyperrev line
Maybe it’s just the colorway 🤷🏻♂️
But similarities aside, the lack of KD signature touches is fine for me even in this rather plain black white Day One colorway.
Not a bunch of story telling on the XII. This and the tongue paper are the only real graphics showing it’s KD’s shoe
It isn’t the sexiest looking shoe I’ve ever seen but it’s performance on court is fantastic.
Should you go out and buy today at retail?
It’s almost been a whopping two weeks since the release date so we’re right around the corner for discount time. Twenty percent off soon, then price drops in a month or so..it really pays to be patient. As I tell y’all every time, don’t get hyped up from a Shoetuber review that says $150 is a good price and then gives you a bunch of affiliate hyperlinks. Just sit and wait and save money so you can buy more pairs of a great shoe at an even better price.. or use those savings for hoop lessons or training sessions to actually get better at the game we all love.
I can’t believe this but the hits keep coming in 2019. Another first team 😮
I’m debating if I should get the KD12 or the ProTro I.

Yikes that’s a tough one. Kobe I a little more stable but zoom feels a little better out of the box with the kd12. Traction about the same although I haven’t gotten a chance to go head to head with them on a court yet. I like the looks of the Kobe I more

Zoom feels a little better out of the box, so after break-in the Zoom on both feel the same?

Kd Heel feels better since it has the extra hex zoom. I’m a heel striker so I like the extra Zoom.

This is the review I’ve been waiting for! Will probably wait for a nice colorway and a good price.
How does the cushioning here feel compared to KD 9/10 or Lebron 15/16 (full-length Zoom)? Or is it more like the Hyperrev 2014/KD11 (Zoom inside a foam)?
LikeLike
I personally like this set up the most out of everything mentioned above. Lebrons still too high overall for me. Kd 9 and 10 a little too soft on the sides on cuts etc.. the kd 12 is just right . Low to the ground , springy yet responsive

Everything was great with this shoe until I saw the photos comparing the midsole/outsole width of KD 12 and PG3. KD looks a lot narrower, while PG3 itself seem not to be very wide at all too. Do you see this would be a problem for an ankle twist? I personally loved my past two shoes, Harden Vol 1 and Dame 4, both were very wide and low, so they were very reliable in terms of potential ankle injuries.
LikeLike
I had no issues but yea I’d prefer a wider shoe for more safety. Most shoes are about the same with as the kd 12 and it’s only been the past year or two where we’ve seen wider overall outsoles.
LikeLike
Well, back then shoes like KD4, Kobe 1,4,5,6, Hyperdunk 2011 had crazy outriggers. But of course there have been narrower shoes over the years too. These KD 12s look like same as Chuck Taylor width though. Thanks for the comparison! Think I’ll buy one and try how it how it goes..
LikeLike
Ha yea I remember it wasn’t that long ago. Not sure why they took the outrigger off ..it doesn’t hurt anything

Been waiting for the review. Gotta say this is the best kd i played in (had 9 and 10 and skipped 11 due to containment issues). For me this has the best cushion since xx8 (best cushion ever and its nearly identical to me). Traction is very very good too: had to recently givr up xxx2 as i was skating on our court. Got adidas byw 98 which are okay to play in the meantime on the super cheap (they have leather parts – super weird these days) and the traction is okay but the rubber just started fraying.
I am fully switching to kd12: hopefully they will last a bit longer than 9s and 10s : both popped within 6 months.
Very impressed with the shoe: one thing to note not too ankle brace friendly and the upper part looks a tad weird with the brace on
Oh and got 25% off right out the gates so got them well under retail

Thanks for another great review Schwollo. I grabbed a pair of KD12s of NDC since I had promo code. Got the shoes in last and have been shooting around in them for a few days. The improved stability, lockdown and containment and having an actual tongue are all welcome improvements from the 11s. I would have liked slightly wider base like the PG3 or Harden 3s, but these work anyway. They definitely feel like a low but in a mid cut that doesn’t shred my achilles like the 11s did. Upper materials don’t feel premium, but they work well so I’m not complaining. Traction has been very good. The zoom directly underfoot feels nice but the overall cushion setup is just okay so far. Midsole starts out firm (I hate Nike’s stiff @## phylon) and is still firm a few days later. Makes the shoe feel clunky on heel to toe transition and the impact protection suffers a bit. Really wish Nike had used a softer phylon, cushlon or react instead. So far I’ve enjoyed the react and zoom setup in the 11s better. From your review it sounds like the foam definitely softens up over time. How long did it take? I have some extended pickup runs coming in the next few days which should help break the shoes in more and give me a better sense if these shoes are keepers.

I’d say it took about 2-3 hours to start breaking in. FYI These will never feel like Boost or KD 9-10 there just isn’t enough volume. It’s just a perfect blend which is what I like out of kicks. Lmk how it goes!

My pair has broken in some more over the last week. Midsole feels a little better but not amazing as some people feel. So far it’s an okay setup for me. I like feeling the zoom but with the firm midsole it just feels a bit unnatural so far – almost jarring at times. I’ve been playing mostly in shoes with boost, bounce, and charged the last few years because the cushioning has a smoother and more consistent feel. The zoom and react in the KD 11s and the cushlon and zoom in the Peg 35s are great because you get the bounce of the zoom but with a midsole that smooths out the ride. I had hoped that perforating the phylon midsole would have a similar effect. So far it hasn’t lived up to my expections. I’ll keep playing in them hoping that the shoes just need more breaking in for the midsole to soften and cushioning to get better/smoother.
LikeLike
I didn’t feel any difference w perforating the Phylon vs regular . It just feels like the Zoom I like and enjoy with a bonus in the heel. I’ve liked all the cushioning set ups 9-12 but I like the 12 the most bc it is what zoom should feel like. Over the years I’ve learn I’d you like foams or zoom or a certain shoe just stick with it rather than switch bc it’s new ( have you seen my top five rotation ? )
LikeLike
So my black “day one” pair got way better after 2+ weeks of break in. Midsole finally broke in and the cushioning was ultimately very nice – bouncy and responsive while stable. When the ID option became available in early May I jumped at the opportunity to make a couple of pairs in Warriors colorways since Nike was accepting promo codes and I had a 20% code. Got them in this week and they looked great. I’ve have only played in one pair and they are performing better than black “day one” pair. The midsoles are breaking in much faster and I’m loving the cushioning after only days this time. I opted for the solid outsole option and the traction is better with less fraying so far. These are not only my favorite KDs to play in, but they are my favorite Nike basketball shoes from the last few years. These are now at the top of my rotation with the Harden 3s. I’m tempted to buy more, but I already have 3 pairs and I want to see how the Zoom Freaks and new Alphadunks perform before I stock up on more.

Haha nice! Surprised to hear the midsole break in time was so different. It’s always fun when you search and search for years until you find a shoe or two that’s perfect.. and then we start over the next season

Too true. So far the KD 12s are looking like a pair that will stick in my longer term playing rotation.
Speaking (err typing???) of shoes we love, I really like the CE 2016 lows. Forefoot boost packs out a little faster than I liked, but the rest of the shoe is money for me. My two pairs are trashed so I’ve been thinking of trying to score some more off eBay. Based on reviews and feedback from a friend, I decided to get a pair of KT4 Lows instead since the reviews and my boy made them sound like an improved version of the 16 lows. My pair just came in and man am I happy so far. Cushioning is great – bouncy with just enough plushness in heel and court feel up front. Materials and fit are very good. I definitely like having a real tongue. Traction is super sticky out of the box. Support and containment seem real good. Can’t wait to try them out and compare them the Vol 3s and KD 12s.

Hi Schwollo! I’m deciding between the dame 5, pro bounce low, hyper dunk 2016 low, marquee boost low and clb 2018. All of them are stupid cheap right now.
Marquee vs clb 2018: I fail to see how they are not similar. Both have good traction and stability, and suffer from fit issues. Great cushion in both. Why did Marquee get first team while CLB did not? Which shoe feels lighter on foot?
Hyperdunk 2016 low and Pro Bounce low: Kinda boring but works. Both are low to ground with just enough cushioning. But I need great cushioning, my feet and knees always hurt.
Dame 5: Gotta flex on westbrook haha.

There isn’t that much a difference between 1-15, I don’t mind playing in any of them. The clb 18 is solid all around but even with the improved fit it still feels a little sloppier than others. Marquee feels lighter to me due to a better fit overall. Marquee just runs super long so sizing down is a simple fix.
Hd16 vs pro bounce: do you want zoom or bounce is what that comes down to
Dame 5: go ahead and get them. Similar traction to marquee good enough cushioning and low to the ground. Boost vs bounce isn’t that a big of a difference it just feels a little more dead than boost

I see that you really like harden (v2/3) but the v3 looks like team shoe with harden logo on it and the v2 can’t last longer in outdoor. I think i want to cop Kobe 1 (for full length zoom) and kobe 4, will be waiting for sales. Previously, i want anta kt4 but i already have kt2 outdoor low and kt3 low. Thank you so much for your review schwollo. You save us all money by reviewing shoes.🙏🏼

What will you choose between pg3 with xdr outsole or t-mac millennium? Which one has the better cushion and traction?

Indoors Pg3 but I don’t have an xdr. Outdoors it won’t matter that much l. I’d still go w tmac . Just more durable feeling overall

If you had to choose between the kd 12 and the nike kobe protro 1, which one would you choose. In particular, comparing traction, the full length zoom of both, and which one fit better. Also, does the weight of the kobe makes that big of difference compared to Kd’s. Thanks.

Zoom feels better in the kd12, traction slightly better with protro fit is about the same on both. Weight doesn’t matter to me so two ounces isn’t a big deal.

Hey Schwollo! How does the zoom air in the KD 12 compare to the forefoot zoom air found in the AJ 28

Aj 28 is better feeling in the forefoot . It is bigger thicker and protruding a lot .

What are your thoughts about the support of this shoe for people with Plantar fasciitis? It feels great upon try on but just wondering how the arch support will hold up over time?

You should be ok since the arch support is plastic it shouldn’t wear down much

Two things…just ordered the black cement colorway for 83 from Nike and how long does zoom air last? Does it bottom out at all and how long do you think these would last overall only playing indoors?

Zoom air lasts longer than regular foams bc the air is encapsulated vs a foam which the air is in the “holes” of the foam. I’d say zoom can last years vs a foam that lasts maybe 8-12 months . Kd12 is very pure zoom feeling since it’s underfoot so you should be good for awhile zoom bb is set up the same way and it still bouncy after 12 years)

Ummm…what about KD 12 vs why not 0.3 for a post, catch and shoot, rebounder…I’m 6’3″ 205 if that helps

Didn’t play in the why not 3 so can’t say. Kd12 should work just fine though
