I started writing a performance review on the Lebron XIII and frankly I got bored. Duke and Nightwing really hit it on the head so I decided to do a comparison review between these three great performers. Here are my original reviews for the Rose 6 and Curry Two
Sizing Advice
I bought an 11 in all pairs
Curry Two: True to size, a little shorter in the toe box vs Curry One. Can go up half size if you want more space in the toe box
Rose 6: True to size or half size down depending on preference. Slightly longer in the toe box so I could fit true to size and half size down
Lebron XIII: True to size although it looks longer then normal ( same sizing as XII). I can see some people going down half size but not up.
Weight
No surprises here. The Curry Two features Speedform and is sparsely padded, thus the light weight. If you want some extra plush padding go Rose 6 or Lebron XIII for a decent amount.
Traction
The Curry Two traction is just plain awesome. No need to wipe, just sticks to the floor. In almost any other year, the Lebron and Rose would probably be tops but the Curry Two traction is just perfect.
I was as surprised by the Lebron XIII traction as everyone else. I found the previous four (9-12) very average/meh except for the X. I hope that from here on out Nike makes Lebron’s traction work for us average joes that slum it on dusty floors. It worked surprisingly well even on dusty floors thanks to a soft rubber compound. Translucent outsoles aren’t bad like everyone believes.
The Rose 6 traction didn’t surprise me despite its looks because almost every Rose shoe has had excellent traction.. Although the splatter design of the Rose 2 wasn’t that great.
Cushioning
The ranking above also coincides with how firm they play with the Rose 6 being the softest.
From heel to toe, the Rose 6 is buttery smooth and pushes back on each step while absorbing all the impact. I love Boost and when it is done right like this, it is amazing.
The Lebron XIII is what I expected the XII to feel like. Big 13mm Zoom at the forefoot and heel really made a difference. Of course there is only one that big in the forefoot but beggars can’t be choosers.
Below: comparison of XII and XIII. I think there is a Zoom Air limit; increase forefoot to 13 mm but take away two Zoom units (top two units aren’t Zoom) to make up for the increase. Oh and shrink the heel’s coverage too.
I could feel the bounce from the get go even if it was only one pod. I didn’t really enjoy the segmentation of the Hex Zoom. They are spaced further apart this time so they don’t feel as seamless as last year. I do not like the Zoom protrusion either but during a game it isn’t really noticeable unless you’re actually thinking about it. It does wobble a bit at the heel if you’re just standing though. I’m pleased to say the overall clunkiness I felt with the XII is gone though.
The Curry Two set up is full length Charged and feels good overall, much better than the Curry One. This set up is firmer than the Lebron and Rose with less bounce and feedback. I still prefer Micro G but this Charged set up is a great too.
In terms of ride height, the Curry Two easily sits the lowest while the Lebron and Rose sit about the same height.
Fit
The Curry Two just fit like a sock for me. I usually don’t like minimal uppers but the Speedform/synthetic upper just worked for me. Some break in time is needed for the synthetic to loosen up but that’s about it. I’ve read some about some Achilles rubbing but I never had that issue.
The Rose 6 was good from the get go for me. I did make an extra eyelet because I felt lockdown could be better though.
Some people may not feel it’s necessary but that’s why our ankles and feet aren’t all the same size and shape. I found my mod effective and really improved lockdown.
The Lebron XIII fit like a sock as well and it should considering it only has one seam and the tongue is stitched in as well (medial side)
If you break a lace please let me know how you relaced. The laces that go through the Posite are covered underneath. The Posite piece sort of helps with midfoot lock down but I think it’s really the extra thick Fuse that it is on top of that holds the midfoot down.
It looks a little long on foot but I still had my ideal finger width at the toe box. The extra height of the ankle collar didn’t bother me either but I did manage to loosen the laces with my lower calves due to the high cut of the shoe.
Stability
I decided to separate “Support and Stability” because I think they are two different things and deserve to be ranked separately. Normally I put them together since they are working in tandem. If a shoe is stable, it usually doesn’t need much support. And if a shoe has a lot of support, you hope the shoe is at least decently stable so you don’t need all that help.
I found the Curry Two to be outstanding in terms of overall stability. I had a hard time trying to tip them with my heel test. I also think the firmer cushioning set up and outrigger help the shoe become very stable while not being restrictive.
The Rose 6 is also very stable due to a side flat outsole, X torsion bar and umm, errr, well, a Stable Frame.
Had the 6 not had all these parts in place, all that Boost would have been too plush and unstable.
The Lebron XIII is also stable overall thanks to outriggers everywhere and would feel even more stable if the Zoom wasn’t sticking out.
It’s also much wider at the forefoot than the XII
Support
None of these three shoes have extensive support. That higher cut of the Lebron XIII looks like it would help but the cut itself doesn’t do much since it is so flexible. The Hyperposite does add a little stiffness and structure but it isn’t going to save anyone’s ankles either.
The Rose 6 looks supportive as well due to the cage but in reality this straps are there for lacing purpose and aren’t stiff enough or oriented in a way to prevent or limit an ankle injury.
The best support feature in my opinion is the asymmetrical collar
I loved this on the AJ XIV and I love this on the Rose 6 now as well. When you turn you’re able the higher cut will slow down the inversion so hopefully the sprain won’t be as severe.
The Curry Two is ultra stable so no real support system outside of fit and the external heel counter is needed.
All three have midfoot shanks of some sort as well as heel counters to control the heel.
Changing directions and sudden starts/stops laterally (i.e. Crossovers, defensive slides) is where I feel containment matters most. All three shoes do an excellent job with this so you can’t go wrong with any of these. I felt the Curry Two did a minutely better job than the other two due to the extended midsole rails and less elastic synthetic toe box.
The Lebron XIII has extra fuse layers as well as an extended higher midsole to hell keep the foot contained.
You can see how much thicker the fuse is around the forefoot. It has to be 2-3 times thicker than the rest of the upper.
The foot actually sits right at the tip of that peak so that the midsole forms a nice little bucket just like the Rose 5.
Imagine the force a shoe takes with a 260 lb freight train like Lebron. I still think he did not like the XI because of the drop in insole pinching between the upper on cuts and slides (contrary to the foot pain excuse )
The Rose 6 went with a lower midsole bucket than last year but still kept the great containment due to a non stretchy upper.

If you leave out price out of the equation, you must have a lot of money. Don’t know about you but I try to maximize the bang for my buck, especially on a depreciable item like shoes. Regardless of discounts, the Lebron XIII is easily the most expensive. All performance aspects being fairly equal, I’d go with the cheaper ones options unless you’re a huge LBJ fan or need a swoosh to validate yourself (I’m not a fan of the XIII’s looks at all)
Conclusion
The big three shoe companies (I guess ? Owning less than 5% isn’t really equal footing) really came out strong this year with their top sig shoes. As you may have read my earlier reviews, both the Curry Two and Rose 6 made it into my ongoing top 3 rotation because they just do everything well and they also excel in traction and cushioning respectively. Personally, if a shoe doesn’t have great traction, it stands no chance in making my rotation because I hate wasting energy trying to stop and change directions while sliding on dusty floors. The Curry Two traction just sticks on anything and I love it. If traction is what’s most important to you as well, get the Curry Two.
The Rose 6 just feels great thanks to a boost in Boost. I can’t say enough about how good it feels from heel to toe. If you love an exceptional cushioning set up, get the Rose 6.
As for the Lebron XIII, I feel it is an excellent shoe but it doesn’t do anything any better than the Curry Two or Rose 6 and nothing stands out to me other than the Hyperposite Clover and the price tag. I will say it is a far better, more natural feeling shoe than the XII and like Lebron, it does everything well. I’d still take my Soldier VI or Soldier IX over these though. Might have less tech, but they are much cheaper in price and perform better.
I hope this comparison helps in deciding which shoe to go with. Feel free to ask questions as always in the comments section or on Twitter/Instagram @schwollo
Thanks for reading !
Thanks so much for this comparison! I value cushioning and traction equally, but I am kind of leaning towards the Curry 2 because it looks to prevent ankle injuries better and has better containment/lockdown. I also REALLY value the Boost and know that it would help with my back and knee problems (I’ll be 29 next month so I’m starting to feel it).
I’ll have to try them on in store and see what works for me. Perhaps sizing down will make up for the sloppy fit in the Rose 6. Traction is extremely important because I am a guard that relies on crossovers and quickness.
Decisions decisions…..

The curry two is very stable which makes sense given Curry’s past. Charged is firmer but still good overall. I’d go curry and pick up Rose 6 later when it hits sales racks.

I don’t think the Rose 6 fits sloppy but that strap system just isn’t effective vs a regular set up imo.it gets better with wear but still .

Awesome, thanks for the quick reply! Heel containment is my main concern, as well as how wide the base is for stability (doesn’t always NEED any outrigger, but I find this USUALLY helps and works when executed this way).
I’m an old school shoe review reader myself, starting with Prof K. to Niketalk (loved Dukes reviews) to what we have today. I really appreciate thorough reviewers such as yourself, who truly understand how to review.

Hey Schwollo,
One more quick question. I think you’ve played in the older Under Armour shoes before, right? I still have a pair of Black Ice Mids (with both uppers, though the mesh upper I use for outdoors since the Micro G is STILL good lol). I was wondering, how does the Curry 2 feel compared to the Black Ice Mid (or any of the older UA shoes that used the 1st iteration of Micro G)? This will give me a good comparison as to whether I should go for the Rose or Curry. From what I’ve read and heard elsewhere, the Charged foam isn’t that great compared to what else is available today, but does for what the shoe is it’s good enough. I know it won’t be Rose 6 good, but still wanted to know which feels better to you between the old Micro G and Charged?
LikeLike
Micro G is still my preference but this Charged is better than the Curry One charged.my CFD2 really explains the difference but basically Charged is firmer and not as bouncy feeling . And yes I have the Black Ice too. Love the shoe but traction is only average so never gets to see the light of day. I love talking shoes so there isn’t a question limit lol
LikeLike
Sweet, thanks for the quick response. Ironically, I have found the Black Ice traction to be pretty good actually, even on dusty floors ( suede upper, green outsole). Because you say you preferred Micro G more I think I am going to go ahead and go for the Rose 6.

Great comparison review as always! Excellent! Now, I’m quite confused haha. For a 40 yr old 6′ 170lb with still quite healthy knees, what can you recommend? I don’t do quick cuts, more on power moves/drives on the paint, quite still agile (can still do steals and take it home!) and more on blocking and rebounding. I want good cushion and support I guess? TIA!

Rose 6 or Lebron XIII or soldier ix to save money . All good cushioning and support /stable . Boost still favorite cushioning . .

Yea that’s what I meant. Ok
Micro g feels more similar to lunarlon than Boost. Lunarlon has a muted feel and a little bounce/feedback. Micro G has more bounce and spring than Lunarlon not quite Zoom though. Boost is a whole different feeling. It doesn’t bottom out at all so it just absorbs all the shock but pushes back immediately. soft on landing/strike but responds fast enough that there isn’t a lag. It makes micro g/ charged/Lunarlon all feel flat . Does that help?

yeah.I get it so is boost bouncy or not? And can you differentiate bounciness from responsiveness?
LikeLike
Yes it is bouncy. Bouncier of all the foams. To me,responsiveness means it reacts when you react. So a firm cushioning might be responsive but not bouncy.
Boost and micro G have it right.

Schwollo — excellent read. I love what you do with your site in terms of the head-to-head comparisons, related basketball product reviews and just an overall different take on aspects of performance footwear. You cover unique details that affect how a shoe fits/feels/performs and this is the sort of stuff that I “geek out” and analyze myself. It is a great add to what’s out there these days in terms of performance reviews.
I only have the Curry 2 at the moment out of these 3, but am really enjoying them. I’m anxious to try the low-cut version when they release.
Looking forward to future content!

I’m almost 37 and I started to have jumpers’ knees. Therefore in a basketball shoe I’m looking for great cushioning and more specifically for EXTREME impact protection. I used to have the LeBron XI and I loved the cushioning set up even if the shoes was bulky, heavy, and rigid. Then I bought the Hyperdunk 2013 and 2014 which are light but do not provide anymore cushioning at all. Do you think the DRose 6 will provide better impact protection than the LeBron XII (now on sale everywhere)? My point is that I understand that the DRose are more responsive than the LeBron XII but I’m not looking for response, I care only about protection for my old knees 🙂
Moreover, I cannot find any decent “air max” basketball shoes out there. I believe this would be softer than a pillow!
Last but not least, let us know if there are new promocodes!

Rose 6 all the way . I recommended to friend with back problems (coming from soldier vi) and said it was like night and day. More response and Better impact protection is a win win. On side note , do full body weight squats and single leg squats , lunges to help strengthen legs to reduce knee pain. Don’t forget hamstrings either (I was a trainer at worlds gym back in the day ) . Single leg works better bc tougher on core muscles.

Agree with you there on strengthening the legs and knees. I’m doing lunges and mostly single leg feet elevated squats which also helps with vertical leap. For knee strengthening, I do pelvic thrusts or bridges with a 3kg medicine ball between my knees. Rose 6 is my choice, thanks to you bro, it’s incoming next Wednesday! 🙂

Schwollo already mentions it, but jumpers knee isn’t really an impact issue (although it intuitively feels like it is). It has a lot more to do with strengthening the surrounding muscles. If you’re interested in attacking the issue that way google articles about jumper’s knee and exercises to help with them.

Just played with it earlier tonight for 1 hour ballin on a dusty court, no slippage at all. Cushioning is average, nothing awesome… Micro G on the CFD is like walking on marshmallows, they’re just amazing! I’ll get to know tomorrow morning upon waking if there is any ankle or calf pains. Fit is snug on the fore foot, no dead space and I went TTS, no side movements, hopefully they will get better in time… The high ankle ankle collar area feels loose, but I think they will get better once they are broken in completely. The fuse material on the forefoot area gets the job done. Overall, I’m satisfied with the performance of the shoe. Thanks.

BTW I’m actually trying to decide between the Rose 6, Curry 2, and CFD1… (if I can find a pair in my size).
I’ve been a long time zoom user (Currently my go to is my tried and true Soldier VI, love the stability, fit, and wide base of the shoe, and the zoom of course). But lately I’ve been developing some patellar tendonitis. So my knees are begging me to go with a foam setup that has ample impact protection while not being a bulky shoe. The other prob is I’ve had some ankle sprains occur playing in my AJ2012 (flight system). What would you suggest as a go to out of the trio I mentioned?
btw keep up the great work! gives us consumers peace of mind when dropping $100+ on hoops shoes

Thanks ! Rose 6 . I’m a big time soldier vi guy myself but switching to boost and micro g really felt better in my knees . Boost in Rose 6 is just plain great . Curry 2 is too firm for bad knees imo but micro G is good . I don’t have bad knees yet so still love curry two out of the three . If you look on eBay you can find some cfd 1 for under 100 . Still one of my top 5 as well . Does that help ?

Played two nights in my friends CFD and they are very comfy and flexible, like the look too. I will say that the next day my joints aren’t bothering me much, but one thing I noticed is that I didn’t get that energy return I was getting with my Soldier VI, so at first running some full court games felt like I didn’t have as quick of a burst and less bounce in my step than the zoom setup in the soldier VI. Still haven’t played in the Rose 6, have a pair sitting at home that i’ve been contemplating returning

Just played a couple full nights with the Rose 6. I am freaking amazed by boost. wow! After playing in them I agreed with your review completely. That cushioning is ridiculous, my legs haven’t felt like this after hooping that much in a long long time. I will say it rides a little higher than what I typically like but I think I can live with it b/c the court feel isn’t terrible even still. However just like you stated the fit is a little sloppy, especially around the ankle and locking down my heel. I had to re-tighten my laces after every game, maybe I’ll use your lacing mod and get it just how it should have been from the get go.
Traction was great too considering I play on mostly dusty courts. Better than most of my other shoes.
I played in the CFD1 again and I like it a lot, low to the ground feel, very flexible, but after experiencing boost I think my knees are in love with the Rose6. Thanks for the help, I think I’ll be pretty happy with this pair!

Thanks ! My heel test is basically trying to turn my ankle from a standstill/ controlled environment. I try to turn my ankle as I’m stepping putting my weight on the outside portion of the shoe since that is typically how I roll my ankle. If I can turn it easily from just standing I know it isn’t going to work for me ( two shoes I was weary of were the Lebron X and Kobe IX and sure enough I sprained my ankle badly in both ) .
