I just realized I never wrote about myself so here goes:
I’m pretty sure I’m similar to 95% of the Asian players out there plus or minus a a few inches and pounds.
Taiwanese American (shout out to jlin!)
5’10”, 178 lbs
Positions:
Asian leagues: mostly sg, pg , sf, some pf
Open leagues: pg and sg
Style of play:
Slasher, penetrator, playmaker, junkyard dog. Think Andre Iguodola meets jkidd
I like to do everything but look to get everyone involved first, score second although I get yelled at by teammates for not shooting enough. JKidd changed my whole outlook on the game. I used to be a scorer first but then I saw how Kidd changed thegame without trying to score. I can shoot, put it on the floor and penetrate depending on what we need. I pride myself on defense and effort and doing the dirty work now that I’m older as I realize I don’t need to score to be effective especially when we have other great scorers.
In high school I had to to choose between playing basketball and tennis since tennis is year round so I chose tennis. Played a semester of college tennis but couldn’t balance academics and tennis. If you really want to get quicker on a basketball court, go play tennis: it is basically a bunch of wind sprints/ horses, quick explosive changes of direction that requires fantastic footwork. If I had never played tennis, I’d never be the player I am now or have the longetivity.
Picked up golf senior year of college and loved it ever since and am currently just under a 4.5 handicap. I’ve learned so much from the game of golf and have learned how to expand that discipline and practice into basketball. I hope to have time to share some of what I’ve learned from golf.
What I look for in a shoe
I try to be as objective as possible but for me and my game, here is what I look for in order of importance.
Traction
First and foremost, far and away the most important aspect is traction. No point in playing in a show with poor traction since you’re just wasting energy scampering to recover and trying to stay upright.
FIT
Like traction, nothing is more frustrating that fighting your shoe or worrying about it sliding around especially on cuts and hard stops. Heel fit is the most important because if you’re heel is slipping or moving side to side you’re prone to turning it (and it awkward when you make a move and your shoe lags behind). Side to side movement is ok depending kb how you play but as a guy that cuts hard and prides himself on defense,I look for zero side to side movement. Some players just run forward with little planting so they seem to not notice side to side slippage or pinching from drop in insoles.
CONTAINMENT
As I stated earlier, coming from a tennis background, I plant and cut hard so my foot needs a lot of support/containment. Most woven uppers don’t work for me unless they have a footstay since my foot will slide out. I don’t mind stiffer uppers if they work for me.
SUPPORT and STABILITY
Usually these go hand and hand but an unstable shoe can have great support and vice versa. Given the choice I’ll take the shoe with great stability and sub par support since I can trust the stable shoe won’t turn over while an unstable shoe has to rely on the support to save my ankles.
MATERIALS and VENTILATION
I could care less about these two categories so that’s why I rarely harp on them unless I’m spending a lot of money for them and the quality is just crappy. I’m not playing outdoors in the Texas heat so my feet are fine indoors and if I were, they would melt anyways in 100+ temps anyways.
MY TOP 5 ROTATION
I don’t have a yearly top five just the five I rotate in and out depending on how I feel. Here is my current five in order or of preference today.
I wasn’t that keen on this shoe until I put it into play during a tournament. Does everything well
Another do everything shoe just a little less restrictive than the Rose 5. Curry One plays the same one but cushioning is firmer
This was my goto before the Rose 5 and Clutchfit came out. One of the last Nike shoes to have real Zoom Air in the heel and forefoot. Excellent traction, support, fit and containment.. And durable too. I discovered these thanks to Nightwing back in 2012.
This was goto prior to the Zoom Solider VI. One of the best traction set ups ever. Doesn’t matter if the floor is dusty or clean it just works. Cushioning is actually very plush compared to today’s Kobes.
I’d have to say this shoe is what made me hooked on high performance bball shoes. I played around in Adidas running shoes in college but after I tried these, I noticed that there wasn’t a subsititite for perfection. Only reason these don’t get into the action these days is because they won’t last and will fall apart due to age. Another combination of perfect traction, fit, support and containment. Please notice I said original Aj xiv bc the retros are just garbage. They don’t fit the same or feel the same and really just for collecting purposes.
I hope this little piece helps shed some light on my reviews. I definitely do not fit the mold, game, build or color for that matter of a lot of the reviewers out there. One thing you’ll notice is that the shoes I really like can do everything well, just like the way I approach the game.
My top five rotation as of this moment:
1. UA Curry 1
2. UA Clutchfit Drive
3. Nike Hyperdunk 2014
4. Kobe 9 Elite Low
5. Jordan Melo M11
After reading this post, I am getting the d rose 5 (big discounts) and the zoom soldier vi (luckily i found one in our local online selling community). Been a fan since I read your curry 1 review (May, 2015). Keep it up sir, looking forward to more reviews and stories.
By the way here is my profile:
Filipino (30 yrs old) 5’9”, 170 lbs
Positions: all positions but most of the time small forward
I play twice a week (regular schedule with my co workers) and a local league

So the question i have forgotten to ask you lol! I have the opportunity to get the lbj 12 low’s, the regular 12’s, the kb 10 elite, the kd 7 elite, ir the 29’s. Can you tell me what you would pick 3 out of those 5 based on traction, fit, and comfort as that is what i think you look for in a shoe most.i think you’ve reviewed all those except the 12 lows. Read all your reviews on them but your the one who has played in them so that is why i am asking you and i dont roll my ankles much too. Can you help me bro?
* i think all of us asians have those wide feet…

Lol yes we all do . For you and your size id pass on lebrons all together, not a very good shoe traction isn’t as good as the others. Pass on kd 7 elite bc of bad heel slippage and I don’t think you’ll like hyperposite. I’d get the xx9 or kbx elite. You’d probably like the xx9 better bc of the upper and unlocked zoom. I like the Kobe x elite bc it is more stable than the xx9 in the heel . Traction about the same with both xx9 is squeakier. Fit is about the same but upper is more conforming on the xx9 bc it is thinner. I hope that helps!

I prolly wont get another pair of clutchfits too i bet your first pair is still holding up. Thanks for the suggestion BTW helps me a lot. @schwollo here is my review on the clutchfit drive(high)
Traction – i agree with schwollo and a bunch of other revieweres that this is one of the best traction setups ever. Its really hard to imagine how they can improve on this. However after playin in the kobe 9 its gotta be 2nd to that setup. One bad thing is that you need to wipe not every play but every so often to prevent dust build up. Dust affects this traction very much imo. Its plaenty durable though, i have used mine indoor and outdoor since january and they’ve been holding up fine.
Cushion- micro g! First time to experience it and it is firm, not crazy light boost firm but firmer than i expected. I expected it to be plush and in reality that firmness helped it perform better imo. The firm feel gave it better stablility and impact protection is great. One of the best foam setups ive used personally and ive gone through a lot of shoes.
Material – clutchfit. Soft. Durable. Flexible. Conforming. The clutchfit upper envelopes your foot like a paper on a deadline. It starts out a little stiff but not super stiff though. It becomes softer as you break it in while being flexible and supportive. When you cut going right the left side will expand to support you pretty cool like spidermans web it flexes but doesnt break.
Fit- one of the best if not the best fit out there on any shoe period. End of discussion.
Support – the clutchfit is basically the shoes main support system. It supports you no matter how hard you cut and is soft enough to not make any hotspots or weird flex in the upper. The heel counter worls great in keeping your heel in place and the lack of a shank did not boher me at all.
Overall – the clutchfit is one of the best bang for your buck shoes on the market period. No matter your currency it will remain bang for your buck. You get great traction, great cushion, a perfect fit, and nice support in a relatively lightwright and cheap package. It doesnt hurt thst it looks good too.
Ps. I double sock always sometimes you dont have to but most oft he time i do.

Thanks man aprreciate it. Btw I think you will like the kd 8’s got a 3 hour session in them so far though that was the first time ive played in them. So upper slightly softer than the kb 10 elite and slightly stiffer than the 29’s. No heel slippage went up half because i like a little bit of allowance in ky shoes cause my feet and myself are still growing. You will be good tts though maybe even half down. Great lockdown throughout the shoe. Although i feel i need to wear them more to soften up the upper a bit cause even the lacing system is hard to tighten, not anything like the lbj 12’s, but its normal because its my first time in them. BTW had both the 12’s and the kd 8’s on and kd’s feel lower to the ground and less stiff. Traction is great though, rubber is not that pliable but its not xdr its semi-soft. Gripped the court nicely with the occasional squeak. Cushion had great impact protection and flexibility. The zoom has not felt responsive thus far but we’ll see if itll get better. It was soft but loe to the ground and stable. And the heel test you do, these should pass but its up to you.Heel and forefoot base is wide and stable. Overall its worth the price imo. I think it looks fresh and ill break necks on or off court in these. My review will be up by july. I think schwollo is still deciding what to cop lol.

2.-Jordan superfly2 (they’re better than 3 or 4) to me
3.-Lebron soldier viii
4.-Chris Paul 8
5.- Nike hyperdunk 2013

Hi schwollo, I’m a 175 pound, 5’10” combo guard that’s 33 years old and aging, lol. I’m still very fast and consistently running around the court like Rip & Reggie Miller & you can say a hint of Ginobili & Nash (what people have told me) with my style. I also play lock down man on man defense like the Glove and Lindsey Hunter, which does get me tired on the offensive end, because I’m not in top shape currently, and life in general has me not playing as much right now but I’m looking to at least get back to twice a week.
in the past 10 years my on court shoes have been
Huarache 2K4
Huarache 2K5
Lebron 20.5.5.
Back to the 2k4
A lot of trial and error in-between
Lebron Solider 6 (The best shoe I’ve ever worn on the court to this day, but haven’t tried anything after).
My problems with age, either my foot is getting wider or they are making shoes so narrow now. I need cushioning for my knees but not a lot of weight added which is why I like the Solider 6, plus I must wear my Nike Double Layer Socks or I’m in pain, and the Solider 6 allow that still, and still being true to my natural size. I used to get calluses and blisters all over my feet and toes with all the other shoes I listed, but not the Solider 6. I will never wear Kobe style lows, only mid or high top because I just cant trust lows for ankle support.
Solider 6 are not as easy to come by now and I’m not really looking to start another experimental stage with expensive shoes again. I know I tried the Rose 2 back in the day, and they were extra narrow, how are the the 5’s compared to the width of the Solider 6? Also the Curry’s seeing you listed them before the Solider 6? Seeing this was started last year, anything new for 2016 that you think would work for me, my issues and style of play?

You sound a lot like me lol
Curry 2 is still tops for me by a large margin. Nothing added except Hyperrev 2016 since 2016. Regarding Rose 5 and 6 they are very similar in width and how they they play. Rose 2 was super narrow and extra long in the toe box but man it sure was sexy

Lol, you know what I came up on your blog looking for another pair of Soldiers and thought the same thing, we have the same needs and like the same shoe. After posting that I did a lot of research and also came up on your Solider 6 review, and I thought I was the only one with the big toe slamming into the side, my only knock on the shoe is that.
Ok for the D Rose 5 & 6, I’m not liking the weight and they also say they are bulky and that reminds me of a Lebron signature which slows me down.
Is the Soldier 6 still better than, the new Soldier 9? Also no word on the 10’s yet, and it’s close to summer.
The Curry ones look so much better than the 2’s but from most reviews I’ve heard the 2’s are better, all around. In your opinion are the Currys the next step in evolution from the 6’s, and how’s the width? Can I run true to size with Double layer socks?
I’m I also read reviews on the J crossover 2 & 3 and I think the 2’s look better and they say the cushioning on the 2’s are better also. I know nothing about this brand.
And the Melo 11’s, but they also look bulky and heavy.
I want the next step up from the 6’s and so far it seems like the Curry 2. I’m not loving the colorways though. Plus will there be an Elite playoff show that’s better?
Also if you have a new pair of 10.5 6’s send me an email, I need to stack up to be safe, I hope the retro Soldiers.

Too bad I’m an 11 in the soldier vi. Soldier vi is still better than the IX. The IX is a nice overall shoe but doesn’t have that fun factor of the VI. Curry 2 has better traction and better fit than the soldier vi . I’d go up half a size from the soldier for thicker socks.
I reviewed the j crossover 2 and 3 and if you indeed play like me, you wouldn’t like them because your foot will slide out of the footbed due to the materials of the upper. Cushioning is nice on the 3 though. I wasn’t overly impressed with the cushion on the 2.
Melo 11 is pretty great shoe and is about the same weight as the Soldier vi. I still prefer the soldier vi though

Follow Up: Went to the mall wearing my Soldier 6’s & Double Layer Socks to compare. The Curry 2’s in a 11 felt good in regards to width, cushioning, how they sit and how quick you can respond in them (Soldier 6 feel, but even better lock down and traction), but my toes felt kinda raised and my big toe felt like it was hitting the edge wall, which bummed me out. I don’t know if the insole needs time to settle, or I need an 11.5 which the whole mall didn’t have, and would be a full size up from my natural size.
I tried the Soldier 9 in a size 11 and it was extra tight, and a lot of the unattached Velcro was showing because of how wide I had to make them.
The sales guy said to try on the Kyrie, and they were horrible, remind me of the old And 1 slip on’s
No Melo 11’s or Rose 6 Boost.
Also do you wear custom Insoles? The guy at Champs put in the Polysorb Ultra Lite Air, with Avec/Con/Air Grid in the 9’s and they lowered my foot in the shoe and it felt nice kinda nice to,
Do custom Insoles take away from the technology used in the shoe?
I need to hunt down some Melo 11’s to try on and 11,5 Curry’s to see whats up.

I usually wear size 8-8.5 and I’m picking between 3 shoes:
-Hyperdunk 2016 (normal, high/mid top edition) size 8
-Curry 2.5 size 9
-KD8 size 9
They are all around the same price.
I’m not sure if this affects the decision in any way but I’m cool with having to switch up some insoles to make the shoes more comfortable.
Thanks

Yes, it went through. Sorry, I’ve just been a little busy yesterday, also I didn’t expect you to reply so quickly.
Anyway, back to my question. I’d like to think my playstyle is like J.Will, J.Kidd, Steve Nash, although I don’t often finish at/close to the rim because I don’t handle as well in traffic. I haven’t really thought about my preferences but looking back at the few shoes that I’ve tried,
-Traction doesn’t have to be too insane, something around the Hyperdunk 2015 is good enough. Preferably I’d like a shoe that works well outdoors but none of the ones I mentioned (from some reviews) seems like they are that durable.
-Talking about the Hyperdunks, those shoes are hot to play in, which is why I have been hesitant about the Curry 2.5
-Cushioning wise, something a touch more bouncy than the Kobe 9 would be lovely.
-Hope I don’t jinx it but I haven’t rolled my ankles to the point of injury yet so I’m not too fussy about ankle support. A high collar actually isn’t my preferred setup, it feels a bit restrictive (which is the whole point of an ankle high) and it sometimes digs into my ankle.
I’m going on a ramble here but ultimately I’d just like a pair of shoes that I can forget that I’m wearing, fits well(maybe a little snug/sock-like, little dead space, and absolutely no heel slips), not too bulky, has a bit of cushioning, if the upper is nice and snug that’s amazing too.
The hyperdunk is only size 8 because that’s the only size available, I wear size 8-8.5 US (7-7.5 UK), a little bit on the smaller side/size (pun (maybe) intended). I have also opted out the Kyrie because everyone has been saying the cushion is hard and the material isn’t comfortable.
If you need any more information feel free to ask, I gotta go cos I’m running late for class now.
